I’ve been using a mind palace since my teens and never thought it odd until I saw tumblr’s reaction to Sherlock’s use of the technique. A couple days ago I found myself building an extension in order to cram for my philosophy exam the following day and I figured I’d use…
right
here’s the post i’ve always wanted to write ever since the idea of mind palaces started popping up all over tumblr and i probably won’t do justice to because i’m all carpal tunnelly and about to go to sleep
but i really really hate the idea of a mind palace
the idea of memory as a vast and well organized and cleanly laid out space is just bad and dangerous and really friggin unwise to me.
have spiderwebs. have mildew. have entire wings blocked off by rubble. have floorboards that bust underfoot and send people plummeting into the basement, only sometimes it’s the attic. Have the kitchen run into the chapel into the outhouse into the servant’s quarters. Set up a pup tent in the dining room and warm up some beans on the sterno because the whole house is shifting and changing its mind as to what it wants to be and none of this will be here tomorrow. keep everything as jumbled up as possible because then whatever comes hunting for you in that mess won’t stand any better chance of finding you than you do. and if that doesn’t work? use dynamite.
yeah, as someone with OCD and attendant intrusive thoughts … I really do not want my mind to be organized like that. Unless it means I can pack the ITs up in a box and never open it again.
